Repairing Minor Leaks on Shingle

»Posted by on Jun 27, 2017 in Repair Shingle Minor Leaks | 0 comments

Probably one of the most irritating things that could occur in our household is when there is a leak in our ceiling. You know what that means? The roof is probably damaged and has small holes in it, because there’s no way a leak can get through the ceiling if the roof is fine right? Leaks actually put us to extra hassle and work especially if we don’t plan yet to do a kitchen remodel. It’s a nuisance because it adds up burden to our hectic schedule. Instead of chilling around because it’s raining, we get to worry about fixing the leak.

Shingle

You know what’s the good news is? If it’s just a minor leak, it’s fixable even though you only have minimal skills and knowledge on carpentry. This tutorial we are going to share with you is an easy one because you can even do it yourself.

Things You Need to Consider Before Doing the Task

Even though the leak you’re going to fix is a minor one, there are still things that you need to consider. Before fixing your shingle roof, here are the things you need to remember as what roofing contractor anchorage advised:

1. Don’t Do the Work When Raining

Yes, leaks occur when it’s raining but it’s not necessary to fix it right away while it’s still raining. Do the task when the rain is done, or you can until tomorrow when everything is not slippery and wet anymore. Why? Because obviously it’s not easy to work while it rains. The rain makes the surrounding darker unlike during sunny days. You won’t be able to work properly if you’re too distracted with how dark it is around you.

Plus, the pouring of rain is another distraction while working. Even you have the proper tool, you will not be able to use it properly because the rain will continue on blocking your vision. The roof is going to be dangerous too because it’s going to be too slippery. Just do some remedy first so the leak won’t create a poodle on your floor.

2. Find an Assistant

An assistant will be a great help for you. Obviously a repair task is not 100% successful without the help of an assistant. Look for an assistant who is strong enough to climb into the roof and hand out the tools for you. She/he can also not stay on the roof with you if her/his main task is going to be handing the tools you need while you work on the roof. Don’t do the task alone because it might not be successful and you end up making the leak worse.

How to do the Repair

Step 1: Expose the Leak

Your number 1 problem is the leak, so the first thing you should do is look for the source of the leak. If you have a flat roof, it’s not a problem because it can be identified easily. But if you have the slanted type of roof, it can be a little tricky because the cause of it might come from distance away from the leaking itself.

To easily identify the leak whether you have a flat or slanted roof is to use a hose and pour water around the area where you suspected there is a leaking. The job of your assistant is to tell you whether the leak is identified or not. Tips for those who have a slanted roof, check the higher part of the roof where you suspect the damage resides, because like mentioned the original leak is far away from the damage itself.

It is actually an advantage if you have an attic because you can instruct your assistant to identify mold, water stains or black marks. These marks could be where the leak is.

Step 2: Identify the Problematic Shingle

When you’re done looking for the leak, identify the part of the shingle that’s causing the problem. If you see that you have missing shingles (this is the reason of the leak) your first impulse is to buy a new one. If you see curled shingles, then you should straighten it.

Step 3: Straighten Curled Shingles

Like mentioned, if you find that the shingles are curled, you have to straighten them out. It might be a difficult task especially if you’re experiencing a cold weather. The option you will have is to straighten it using heat. You can use an electric dryer for it, not an open flame because the shingles will be destroyed even more.

Step 4: Attach the fixed Shingle

When you’re done fixing the curled shingles, use asphalt cement to attach it back in its place. Apply the asphalt cement underneath and on the sides of the fixed shingle.
